As a rich man, Hershey was able to enjoy the finer aspects of life. Hershey traveled around the world meeting different people and learning new ideas, all the while using his credit cards and becoming more and more in debt. In 1891, he bought a trailer filling it with plants and even exotic birds! In 1898, Hershey married an Asian Catholic girl named Catherine “Kitty” Sweeney and together they made the Lancaster trailer a loving home. Hershey’s newfound wealth gave him many new enjoyments in life.

Hershey faced many challenges. Mr. and Ms. Hershey loved each other and were determined to make the world a better place. Together, in 1909, they signed a Deed of Charter to a school for orphaned boys known as the Hershey Industrial School. Though they were working together to make the world a better place, Catherine Hershey’s health began to decline. In March 25, 1915, Catherine died, which caused Milton Hershey tremendous amounts of grief. Milton Hershey also faced more hardship as World War I began and sugar became scare. Milton decided to build his own sugar refinery and town in Cuba. However after the war the sugar market crashed and Hershey was forced to borrow money from the National City Bank of New York, which he paid off in two years. Another hardship Hershey had to face was the Great Depression. He was determined ensure his employees had job security and even launched a massive building program providing jobs. Many buildings were built for Derry Township during this time period including the Hershey Community Building and the Hershey’s Sports Arena. Hershey overcame many challenges with integrity, creativity and hard work.

The Hershey Trust Company is involved in many of donations and benefits provided by Hershey to the community. After his death, he donated money to help alleviate the taxes for the town public schools. The Hershey Trust Company has allowed Milton Hershey’s Testamentary Trust Fund to rise to thirty three million dollars. The Trust Company also used money to create the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. This medial school and teaching hospital became the town’s greatest employer in the 1990s. With over six thousand employees of the Medical Center, the town’s population grew and new houses developed. This allowed the town to flourish and for businesses to have more customers.
The Hershey Trust Company also serves as the trustee for the Milton Hershey School. When Hershey donated his company stock, the company was able to put huge amounts of money into the school. Hershey Trust Company also serves as the trustee for the M.S. Hershey Foundation, which was created to help young people who had limited employment opportunities. The Foundation endowed Hershey Junior College and helped them offer tuition free higher education to Hershey employees and residents. After Hershey Junior College closed, the Foundation began to gain ownership of cultural institutions. They gained ownership of the Hershey Theatre, Hershey Museum and Hershey Gardens. These places became non-profit as a part of the Foundation. The community’s citizens enjoy these places and without Hershey, may have never had these wonderful cultural centers to go to.
Hershey is a great man whose impact on the world is evident. His donations have changed the lives of many people. His efforts to make America a better place for people has been very successful. Many people especially the students at the Milton Hershey School have completely different lives due to the kindness and generosity of one man. Hershey’s Trust Company also shows Hershey’s huge impact on American people. Hershey wanted to ensure the needs of his workers were met. Hershey created the Hershey Trust Company so that the community had a bank that could accommodate its financial needs. This company helped the Hershey citizens by handling Hershey business payrolls, and providing savings accounts, mortgages and loans. The company was important in the development of the town and helped finance Hershey’s construction plans. The Hershey Trust Company also helped people during hard times. During the Great Depression, many people were struggling financially. Due to longer wages and less working hours, workers fell behind on their mortgage payments. The Trust Company was understanding during this horrible time and only foreclosed on two Hershey mortgages. This company had a huge impact on peoples’ lives.
